Evaluation.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In my coursework I have tried to portray the conventions of newspapers into my own work in my own original style. I made it clear to show was I was promoting and what I was trying to introduce to public. I tried to make my layout like some of the other local newspapers I researched making the stories aligned and having a menu down the side to show what's inside the paper. Another convention of the newspaper is the logo and masthead which is always at the top of the page and I have followed this precisely.
I also used different forms and conventions in my paper as I have used two different types of font for my masthead which is not usually used in normal local newspapers. I have done this to attract the reader when purchasing a newspaper. I have tried to portray in one of my stories that most people now a days sterotype kids as horrible and are always associated with crime. I have changed this as one of my stories is about children who are raising money for charity.

How effective is the combination of your media product and your ancillary texts?

From the research I carried out I felt that the products had to be carried out in my main newspaper and my ancillary which were a poster and a website. I felt linking all my ancillary texts with my main task would make the reader/customer realise that if they saw the poster they would be able to recognise the newspaper and website easily.
When I designed and created my poster I researched other posters which helped me with my final idea. Most of the posters researched all had a statement at the bottom. I added this to my poster as the 'Metro' poster had a strong statement to with the morning which is when this newspaper is distributed. I also made my poster about the morning as this is when i wanted my newspaper to focus on. My poster was pretty basic and not too over crowed as I thought 'less is more' which what i always applied to my newspaper as it is not too busy on the page. The website was a lot easier to create as I put some of the articles form the newspaper on it. I also created other pages on the website such as sport and entertainment as i could not add them to the newspaper as I could only create 2 pages.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

The audience feedback I received when planning and creating my newspaper, posters and websites was both positive and negative. I appreciated the honest opinions of some peopl
e which helped me evaluate my work and change some of according to the feedback I got. I had very mixed reviews when people gave me feedback so I also had to put my own personal opinion towards it to come out with the final outcome. In my opinion my audience feedback was vital in the process of completing my work to produce something that I was completely happy with. Any negative feedback I received was looked upon constructively as there was always room for improvement in my main and ancillary tasks. My target audience is the middle age market as it has important and historical stories in it and a lot of people in this local area would appreciate these stories.

.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

To achieve the highest standards in my work I used media process for a lot of my work.
For creating my tasks I used

Adobe Photoshop and Paint

Microsoft word

Adobe Photoshop is used a lot in the media business to edit and create photos and layouts for newspapers or
adverts. I have a lot of experience using Adobe Photoshop as i have created pictures before so this was the most easiest programme for me to use to create my newspaper and poster.
For the research stage of the coursework I used both secondary and primary resources:

Google/internet

Questionnaire

Blogger - Coursework.

Piczo - Website

I created my website using the free online website creater. I chose to do a website for one of my ancillary tasks as the internet is used everyday I made a website so everybody can access the newspaper from phones, laptops and computers as most people rely on technology now.

I used primary resources to find out the conventions of newspapers as a member of my family used to work the Daily mail they helped me with the codes and conventions of a newspaper and apply them to my own newspaper. I used Google to search other newspaper websites to help me design and create my own using the website creator Piczo. I used Piczo as it was a free website maker. I could have possibly used the programme Adobe Dreamweaver but this was going to difficult to put on the internet to use as a live website.

Final Newspaper

This is the front cover of my newspaper, from doing lots of research i have tried to take elements from each paper i have looked at and added it to my own, like the layout and content. I have not used too many colours as I didn't want it to look too crowded on the page and then when the paper goes to print it wont be too expensive. I tried to make the Masthead stand out so it would look eye catching on the shelves in the shops. I positioned the images in the central reservation on the newspaper so it in the readers eye line which will attract the reader.

Theories

The main consideration I had when creating my local newspaper was the representation about the children. Kids are judged as a stereotype most people think of kids as being uncaring and don't help any one in anyway. Today's generation are seen in a bad light and i have turned this into a more positive way by writing a story about a class of children who raised money for a charity in a read-a-thon. I posted this story on the front page of my newspaper and also added it on line to the website, i did this as most people look on line and can see that children are not always how people think of them.

Poster

Final Poster.

This is my final poster. I have made this poster pretty basic but I also think it is very effective. I have used the breakfast picture to show that the newspaper is associated with breakfast time that you cant start your day without 'The News Room' newspaper. I believe I have used a good amount of colour to make the poster stand out but not too bold.
I think that the slogan at the bottom is effective and gives a strong message and that I have highlighted some of it in green. I have highlighted it in green and the colour is usually associated with GO which is also why i have used this colour for the tick on the picture. I have also used red for the cross and red usually stands for STOP. I have added the newspapers website to the bottom of the poster so that when people see the poster they also know that you can access the papers news stories online when at work etc.

Website

The News Room.

Online newspapers have become very popular over the years, people are always logging on to read the latest news at work and home. As you can see in the picture above this is my homepage. I have done a lot of research on websites to help me put across the same look as other websites have. I have used pictures, links and clear text to help the reader navigate easily. I have used interactive hyper links for the reader to switch from page to page.I created more than 2 hyper links on this website to show what I would like the website to be laid out like.

Codes and Conventions of Newspapers.

  1. Local newspapers are either usually weekly or daily. Weekly ones are usually free.
  2. Using facts and figures keep the reader interested.
  3. There are usually lots of different fonts and colours in newspapers. The main headline is always big and bold to make it look like the main attraction on the page.
  4. Kids on newspapers always have the best selling rate. Big pictures make the paper more noticeable.
  5. The papers website is usually printed somewhere in the first 3 pages.

The Press Complaints Commission

The Press Complaints Commission (PCC) is a regulatory body for British printed newspapers and magazines, consisting of representatives of the major publishers. The PCC is funded by the annual levy it charges newspapers and magazines. It has no legal powers - all newspapers and magazines voluntarily contribute to the costs of, and adhere to the rulings of, the Commission, making the industry self-regulating. The Press Complaints Commission replaced The Press Council in the early 1990s.

A code was introduced covering the issues of:

  1. Accuracy
  2. Opportunity to reply
  3. Privacy
  4. Harassment
  5. Intrusion into grief or shock
  6. Children
  7. Children in sex cases
  8. Hospitals
  9. Reporting of crime
  10. Misrepresentation
  11. Victims of sexual assault
  12. Discrimination
  13. Financial journalism
  14. Confidential sources
  15. Witness payments in criminal trials
  16. Payment to criminals.

All members of the press have a duty to maintain the highest professional standards of the code.

Copyright

I took all of the images used on my newspaper and poster, i did not need copyright permission as they are all primary resources.

I did not need copyright permission for this images as I created these images myself using Photoshop.

I also did not need copyright permission as i created this logo myself using Photoshop.

Website Research.

The News Shopper.

This is the website for a local paper called The News Shopper. As you can see they have a menu along the top of the page which is called the menu. Each button is interactive which links you to another page on the website. The website has 3 columns, in one of the columns there is a calender and in the left one there is where their latest headlines are and there is a picture in the centre which draws your attention to it. There is also a lot of colours which also makes it attractive.

Kent Messenger.

This website is for the Kent Messenger newspaper. This website doesn't look as cluttered as the News Shopper website. There is one picture left of the website which is the main focus on the page. The advertising is down the right of the page and the logo is above that. This website also has a menu across the top with interactive buttons.

Questionnaire.

Questionnaire.

I have created this questionnaire to help me find out what ages group I will be aiming my newspaper at. I handed my questionnaire out to 20 people of different ages. I asked what kind of newspaper they like and which is their most preferred section in it.

Questionnaire Results.

As you can see I have asked 20 people their age group most of the people I have asked were 18 - 25 years. There were 5 people who were 26 - 35 which is also another age group I will be aiming it, so far these results do not show me the information i need to no to base my newsp
aper on until I no the kind of newspaper articles they like to read.

I have learnt through my questionnaire results that 14 people prefer to read Tabloids then Local Newspapers. These types of papers tend to have more entertainment, stories of interest and gossip columns. The language used in these newspapers is less formal and is easily readable. Discovering this information will help as I will now involve more tabloids into
my local newspaper.

As you can see by this pie chart form the questionnaire a lot of people like to read about entertainment in newspapers. The other most popular section of a newspaper is the Local News which is essential to have. The least most interested area are the adverts. By including more entertainment may encourage a younger audience to read the newspaper.

By looking at these results I can say that the majority of people would prepared to spend roughly 30p - £1.00 on a newspaper. I will be taking this into account for my newspaper.

Poster Research.

Poster Research.

Newspapers create posters to advertise. In my research i have found that not all newspapers advertise using posters, some use radio advertisement and online advertisement. As I was researching I found out that The Sun and Irish Sun t
ogether sold 3,009,987 copies a day in August 2010.

This poster for the newspaper The Sun focuses most on the price of the newspaper more than the stories or headlines. The colour of the posters works well as the colours are mostly white which makes the logo stand out a lot more. This poster it suitable for anyone as it is easy to read and is not aimed at any particular gender.
This poster also shows exactly what you are getting when you buy this newspaper as it has printed what topics are in it and what you expect when you get it.
By reading the list it shows that this newspaper is grea
t for any audience as it has celeb style , Politics and super savers.

The Guardian is defiantly not as successful as The Sun as they sell 284, 514 copies a day according to the latest Audit Bureau of Circulation figures.

The Guardian posters attracts me right away as they have used bright bold colours against a white background which really stands out. This poster is like the Sun's as the colours are against a white background, like that poster this one is not aimed at any specific gender.
The Guardian logo does not stand out as much as the other colours take over the page, but the logo is clever as it also shows that they have a website.
The text on the poster states : ' When your owned by no one, no one controls what you say. Your free to say whatever needs to be said. Inconvenient to some. Great for the rest of us.' By reading this it gives sense of power to it and the quote shows that the Newspaper lets readers have freedom and their own opinion.

This Metro newspaper poster has a sense of humour about it. The quote at the bottom of the posters says : 'Made for morning brain'. This newspaper is a free paper which is distributed at train stations when people are going to work early in the mornings. The image is of a man who has done his shirt buttons up wrong which is trying to indicate he is tired from getting up in the morning and that he needs to read Metro.

Analysing Newspapers.

Analysing Newspapers.

All of the newspapers I will be analysing will contain normal topics such as Political events, crime, business, entertainment, the society and sports. I will be analysing both local newspapers and non local newspapers.

The Sun.

This newspaper is not a local newspaper. This newspaper is sold all over England. The Sun newspaper always uses bright bold colour that attract you straight away. Their Logo is also their name. The white font on top of the red background really makes it stand out when on the shelf at a shop. The Sun always have a very bold front page headline and picture which automatically draws you to it. The white font infront of the black background makes it stand out. The menu down the side of the papers front page shows another story. there is also a competition shown in the left bottom corner of the menu which means it is inside.

Kent Messenger.

As you can see the Kent messenger is a lot different from the Sun. The layout is also different as the menu is on the right side and shows there is a lot more inside the newspaper than the Sun as it has small information boxes. The main headline is also not as bold and eye catching. There is also more text and adverts on the front page.
The colours used on the front page are bright and there are many used which attract readers. The Kent Messenger logo is very basic using the primary colours black and yellow. The logo is very simple its self as it only has a KM and a white horse in it.
This newspaper is a local newspaper for people who live in Kent. The articles in this newspaper focus on the local news and highlights happening in the local area.

Metro.

This newspaper is made for people to read when commuting to a from London. This paper is free and can be picked up at train stations. The main topics in this newspaper are South east weather, news from all over the world, travel , sports , politics from the capital, London.
This news paper had a bold Masthead. The layout is very simple and basic. The photo takes up most of the front page which makes you focus on that the most. The menu on the left side also give information about whats inside such as , best places to eat out etc.
